ABOUT “LA TRAVIATA”
Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre
November 2017
I think that La Traviata represents the essence of the opera. There is passion, drama, love, compassion, luxury, everything immersed in this wonderful music with the extraordinary capacity to touch in the heart of everybody. Don’t matter the nationality or the age, there is something inside this music, inside every single phrase that put yourself like a part of this stunning and dreamy story without realizing. It’s such a dream to be the costume designer for this opera. We worked very hard trying to put all these characteristics within costumes and accessories. Something rich and luxury who could represent the gold prison that Violetta lives on. Every single singer on the stage has a totally different costume and accessories, to see distinct characters and personalities like in the real life. For the dancers, we created historic costumes that represented accurately the “Goyesco” dress, the Spanish “Torero” in the nineteenth century. Sometimes you can get inspiration in the marvelous book by Alexandre Dumas, sometimes is the music by Giuseppe Verdi that tells you what you need to do, but sums up, my vision for the costumes of La Traviata is to put a little bit of color and light in an opera that speaks by itself.
